Most small objects can be synthesized from a number of glider which does not exceed the population of the object in bits. (Of course, as the size of objects increase, so does the possible complexity, so larger objects are more prone to be expensive, if not impossible to synthesize.)

The few remaining overly-expensive objects are shown here. Categories for which all syntheses are reasonable are omitted. (NOTE: As technology improves, objects may be removed from these lists.)

Buckingham completed the monumental task of synthesizing all objects up to 14 bits in the 1980's, including reducing the costs of all still-lifes to no more than one glider per bit. He has recently reduced these to strictly less than one glider per bit (except for 13 14-bit still-lifes).
