Life Objects Without Known Syntheses

Most small objects can be synthesized from gliders. Buckingham completed the monumental task of synthesizing all objects up to 14 bits in the 1980's.

Most still-lifes up to 14 bits, pseudo-still-lifes up to 15 bits, P2 oscillators and pseudo-oscillators up to 16 bits, and larger period oscillators and pseudo-oscillators up to 20 bits can also be synthesized. The basic Spaceships and pseudo-spaceships, as well as most flotillae of these can all be synthesized.

The few remaining objects with no known syntheses are shown here. Categories for which all syntheses are know are omitted. (NOTE: As technology improves, objects may be removed from these lists.)


0 still-lifes up to 14 bits without any known synthesis:

All still-lifes up to 14 bits can be synthesized.

(The syntheses of all 15-bit still-lifes are only about 25% complete, but all but about 100 appear to be buildable using previous techniques.)


The 66 period-2 oscillators up to 17 bits without any known synthesis:

At present, the technology for synthesis of oscillators containing large number of disconnected bits is sorely lacking.
